Congratulations to Steve Mitzner of Lakewood for winning Bike of the Month with his 1938 Indian 4.
Inline 4 Brothers
This was Steve's first time to Vintage Bike OC, but his brother Ed is no stranger. Ed won Bike of the Month back in September 2007 with his 1929 Henderson KJ also an inline four cylinder.
Steve bought the Indian back in 1969 when it was only 31 years old. He rode it for about a year, but it smoked so much that he ran 70 weight oil in it. At that time rebuilding the engine was too expensive so the bike was put away and stored under his workbench.
39 Years Later...
In 2008 Steve had more time and funds available. After urgings from his brother Ed, Steve had the engine professionally rebuilt. After the rebuild, the engine didn't run well so Steve and Ed rebuilt the engine again. To demonstrate how well it runs, Steve kick started it with his hand.
The bike has just got back on the road, and Steve is up in the air about how or if to finish it. It seems apparent to me that most people like it just the way it is.
See all the pictures in our July Gallery. Thank you Steve for bringing it to the meet.
