Congratulations to Bob Nichols of Newport Beach for winning Bike of the Month with his 1937 Indian Big Base Scout.
I first met Bob in August 2008 when he came to our meet. At that time he gave me a posters of his yellow and red bikes. Over the years I've gotten to know Bob fairly well and I've spent many Saturday
evenings at Costa Mesa Speedway with Bob and Smokey.
Bob was a Speedway Racer in the 1940's and has owned this bike since 1940. At 94 years of age, he still owns and operates Bob Nichols Racing www.BobNicholsRacing.com creating
high performance motorcycle parts. Visit his site for a great story of his early years.
There were only 51 Big Base engines built. Of those 51 only twelve are known to be in existance. Bob owns two of those twelve. He's owned this bike since 1940 and paid $135.00 for it.
Five years ago, this bike beat the Harley factory bikes at Oglethorpe Georgia. It hasn't been running in several years due to a hole in the case. For the past 6 weeks Ken "Smokey" Elford
of Long Beach has been working on it and getting it running.
Thanks Bob for bringing such a great part of history to our meet. See all the photos in our October Gallery.
Starting the Indian today at the meet.
